disability and the arts. It includes discussion
of the visual arts, performing arts, music,

Session 1: Keeping Your Day Job? (If You Have One)
Building a career in the arts is tough, and
tougher for artists with a disability. This

of professional artists who describe their experience of sustaining arts practice, both in
the mainstream and disability fi elds. We raise
the questions: How do we cultivate strong art
practice for all abilities? What are the keys to change?

administrators from the fi eld of arts and
disability. Discussion explores innovative
work methods, including program change,
mentoring, career pathways, funding and

how people/artists with a disability are

Session 3: The D Word – Identity Politics and Disability in the Arts
Does a rhetorical stance on ‘identity’
determine the way artists make work and
how it is critically received? We examine the
representation of ‘disability’ in the arts and
‘disability arts’ in mainstream art practice, the
media and to audiences. We query the public
expectations of marginalised artists and ask
if ‘visibility of disability’ is important as an
identifier. Queer, gender and race identities
feature as part of this discussion.
