HousingFirst Group Exhibition HousingFirst

After an unprecedented year marked by uncertainty, collective anxiety and upheaval, we present work created during and after lockdown. The exhibition features art created by residents of community housing, reflecting the experiences of artists during the pandemic and as a response to it. You will experience pieces examining and celebrating ideas of home, life and healing.

In June 2020 HousingFirst engaged two resident artists from Gasworks Arts Park in creating two virtual workshop series for their housing tenants.  A key goal of the program was to inspire tenant creativity, encourage connection from home and to increase greater participation and interest in the Housing First exhibition held annually at Gasworks Arts Park.

The resident artists, Rebecca Garfield (visual arts) and Ursula Dutkiewicz (ceramics), created and scripted four 45-minute tutorials which were shot over two days in November 2020.  Each series was released to tenants for participation over the months of March and April 2021.  Participants received an art box which contained all the materials and equipment they needed for the online series they were undertaking.  Participants used an enclosed DVD or YouTube link to watch one of the four workshops each week which would help them progress towards completing a piece of art for the Housing First Exhibition.  In addition to the DVD / YouTube link, participants were able to attend a ‘live’ class over Zoom each week to ask questions and share their progress through the program with others in the program.
