Sowing Seeds JoJo Zhou & Miranda Middleton

- Performing Arts

“There’s always something that can grow, despite the cold …”

Sowing Seeds is a new piece of verbatim theatre, born out of the diverse stories, characters, and cultures found within a Melbourne community garden. Performed in an immersive and site-specific way, it invites the audience to share in the gardeners’ rituals, such as harvesting basil for the pesto-making contest in the summer, and planting seeds in the spring. Sowing Seeds is about the importance of community, and the ramifications for the individual when that community is split apart.

We’re all looking for a bit of hope right now. Hope that we’ll make it through today. Hope that tomorrow will be better. Hope that we’re not too late to save the world. Sowing Seeds is a show about starting with something small and seeing what it can grow into with a bit of faith, love, and perseverance.

Written by playwright JoJo Zhou, this verbatim play was born out of the diverse stories, characters, and cultures she found within the community gardens of Naarm. Can’t grow beans? Just ask Charlie. Want to learn the difference between native and Indigenous plants? Sit and observe Country with Jess. Not sure where to start? Rosie will help you with your soil.

Performed outdoors, around a transformative garden bed designed by Sam Diamond, Sowing Seeds invites audiences into the community, to share in its rituals, mourn its losses, and celebrate its triumphs. Together with the six-strong cast of actors, director Miranda Middleton will present a hopeful, funny, and regenerative piece of theatre for these challenging times.
