The Mythic Body
Melbourne Fringe Festival
A reclamation of the body that has been repressed, awakening the wild, soft, powerful, and cyclical.
The body that has been repressed
Forgotten
Sterilised
Covered up
Too much
She is still here
Waiting for us to remember
Calling to us through the body
Through the dark
The womb
The symbol
Come home
To me
To the wild
You will not escape my love
My presence
My power
‘Some say it never happened…
Some say it happens over and over’
From TRILOGY by H.D.
The Mythic Body is an amplification of that which has been attempted to be silenced. The wild, the beautiful, the ugly, the nurturing, the soft, the powerful, the night. In this contemporary dance and physical theatre piece we explore how women’s bodies have been viewed and expressed through myth, archetypes and story, and how collective stories in our current cultural narrative often suppress deep wisdom around what it means to be a woman and what it means to be connected to the ecosystems we are in. Ecosystems of community, earth, family, body, flesh, cycles and rhythms. Myth is deeply contextual and often belongs to the more than human world. Myths pulse golden threads and road maps, for people to navigate collective challenges and also to navigate their own inner world and psyche. How can these mythic maps lead us to a deeper embodiment of our inner and outer lives?
