Between Homes
- Andrew Kim

July 28–August 9, 2026

Where are you really from?

If youʼve ever been asked that question, or asked it yourself, you know itʼs never a clear answer.

Between Homes explores the idea of home not as one fixed location, but as something fluid – physical and metaphysical space shaped by place, memory, and emotion. To be between cultures is to carry multiple homes simultaneously. None of them fully complete, but all of them real.

The landscapes are grounded in lived experience – the places, people, and rituals that make somewhere feel like home. A Korean meal cooked by my mum. A Sydney skyline glimpsed from the plane window. My partner and I taking our dog for walks in the afternoon.

The iconographic works invite you into a different kind of space – metaphysical and ceremonial. Korean minhwa painting traditions, dancheong colours, and Tibetan Buddhist thangka bring together Australian and Korean flora, fauna, and sky constellations, coexisting to honour the identity I carry.

The abstract works move somewhere different, exploring emotion and the spiritual dimension through the natural world. All works are an offering – gratitude for everywhere I am really from, however complex that answer may be. I hope they give you space to ask the same – which homes have shaped you into who you are today.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Andrew Kim is a Korean-Australian painter based in Melbourne. Trained in engineering and architecture, Kim’s spatial sensibility shapes paintings that explore spirituality, symbolism, identity, and memory.

His work draws on Korean folk painting, Buddhist art, and the Australian landscape – rendered with playfulness and deliberate naivety. His paintings reflect the complexity and joy of living between two cultures.

Andrew previously held two solo exhibitions of digital illustrations at Mars Hill Cafe in Sydney, and exhibited at Louis Joel Gallery in Altona as part of the 2025 Wundergym Cohort. Between Homes is his first solo exhibition of painted works.
